Liverpool’s historic Georgian Quarter has seen a significant transformation with the completion of a major project that has been recognized with a prestigious award in the transportation sector. The City Council of Liverpool, in collaboration with Huyton Asphalt, was awarded the Project of the Year (under £5 million) at the Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation (CIHT) North West Awards 2025 for their work on Blackburne Place.
The award highlights the exceptional partnership between Liverpool City Council and Huyton Asphalt in implementing a project that enhances community mobility and promotes sustainable infrastructure in the region. The Blackburne Place project aimed to improve the area’s unique character while enhancing the overall experience for pedestrians, cyclists, public transport users, and vehicles.
The project received praise from the judging panel for its commitment to sustainability, incorporating recycled asphalt planings, bio-materials, and electric plant vehicles to reduce carbon emissions and align with Liverpool’s net-zero ambitions. The CIHT North West Awards celebrate excellence in the highways, transportation, and infrastructure industry, recognizing projects that uphold the highest standards.
Additionally, Liverpool City Council was acknowledged for its efforts in two other highway projects: the ongoing Live Labs 2 project and the Catharine Street works under the Active Travel program. Both projects demonstrate innovation and dedication to environmental sustainability, with initiatives like Kiacrete, the UK’s first permeable concrete solution, which was funded by the Live Labs project.
