Stats boss quits as minister says new leadership needed

Sir Robert Chote, the chairman of the UK Statistics Authority, has stepped down from his position overseeing the Office for National Statistics (ONS), following a critical government review earlier this year. The Bank of England had also raised concerns about the reliability of ONS job market data, which influences decisions on interest rates. Cabinet Office Minister Pat McFadden emphasized the need for new leadership to address the challenges identified and restore confidence in ONS statistics.

Sir Robert, who joined the UK Statistics Authority in 2022, will assume the role of president at Trinity College, Oxford in September. Despite speculation, a senior Cabinet Office source clarified that Sir Robert’s departure was voluntary, emphasizing the importance of trustworthy statistics in formulating effective government policies.

Sir Ian Diamond’s resignation as national statistician at the ONS in May due to health reasons preceded Sir Robert’s departure, marking a series of changes in senior positions at the statistical agency. As a critical data source for government policymaking in various areas, including state benefits and crime, the ONS came under scrutiny in April when former senior civil servant Sir Robert Devereux conducted an investigation and highlighted internal performance issues. The focus on new projects over core economic data delivery was identified as a major challenge by Sir Robert, prompting a response from acting national statistician Emma Rourke, who acknowledged the highlighted issues and expressed readiness to address them.

The ONS’s role in providing essential data for decision-making has been under scrutiny, with calls for leadership changes and a renewed focus on core statistical functions to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the information provided to policymakers. The challenges identified by government reviews and internal assessments highlight the importance of maintaining integrity in statistical reporting to facilitate informed decision-making processes that benefit society as a whole
