In Sheffield, a tragic incident unfolded at a wedding reception where Hassan Jhangur intentionally rammed his car into a crowd, resulting in the death of Chris Marriott and injuries to four others. Mr. Marriott, a helpful individual who had intervened after Jhangur’s sister was harmed in a previous altercation, lost his life at the scene of the crash. Following a trial at Sheffield Crown Court, Jhangur, 25, was convicted of murder along with three counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and one count of wounding with intent related to the other victims.
Furthermore, evidence presented in court revealed that Jhangur also carried out a brutal knife attack on his new brother-in-law, Hasan Khan, post the car crash, inflicting multiple stabbings to the head and chest. The presiding judge, Mr. Justice Morris, declared a life imprisonment sentence for the murder conviction, with the minimum term to be determined at the sentencing hearing before any consideration for release. Additionally, Mohammed Jhangur, the accused’s father, was found guilty of obstructing justice for concealing the knife used in the attack on Hasan Khan.
Acknowledging the severity of the crimes committed, the judge issued a caution to Mohammed Jhangur that the full range of sentencing options remains under consideration while granting him bail. The court proceedings highlighted the tragic consequences of Jhangur’s reckless actions that led to the loss of life and serious injuries, leaving a lasting impact on the community and the families affected by the incident in December 2023
