Marcus Fakana: Teen jailed in Dubai for sex with girl is released

A 19-year-old British teenager, Marcus Fakana, who hails from Tottenham, north London, has returned to the UK after being released from jail in Dubai. Fakana was sentenced to a year in prison in December for engaging in a consensual relationship with a 17-year-old British girl while on vacation in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), where the legal age of consent is 18. However, he has now been granted a royal pardon by Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, according to the campaign group Detained in Dubai.

Upon his release, a spokesperson from the Foreign and Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) mentioned that Fakana opted to return to the UK quietly without media attention to be with his family. The FCDO provided support to him and stayed in touch with his family during this time. Radha Stirling, the chief executive of Detained in Dubai, confirmed that Fakana is currently recuperating and highlighted the attention his case garnered due to concerns about the treatment of tourists and the severity of the sentencing.

Fakana’s ordeal began when he was on vacation with his parents in the UAE last August. He developed a romantic relationship with another Londoner, who only recently turned 18, according to the campaign group. The girl’s mother discovered messages between the two after returning to the UK and reported Fakana to UAE authorities. Subsequently, Fakana penned a letter to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum from Al Awir Prison, seeking his release through an Eid pardon, a gesture of compassion often extended to inmates by the monarch or president during religious holidays.

In response to the case, Radha Stirling emphasized the need for parents to be mindful of the UAE’s strict laws that could lead to legal repercussions for teenagers engaging in behavior deemed innocent in their home countries. The government of Dubai reiterated that, under UAE law, the girl is legally considered a minor, and her mother, as the legal guardian, lodged the complaint following internationally recognized protocols. Dubai authorities maintained their commitment to upholding the rights of individuals and ensuring fair judicial proceedings within the legal system
