A demonstration in support of Palestine Action led to the arrest of 29 individuals in London, according to the Metropolitan Police. The police stated that those taken into custody were arrested on suspicion of offences under the Terrorism Act 2000. The photos from the Westminster protest depicted a small group with signs saying “I oppose genocide, I support Palestine Action.” This group was banned and categorized as a terrorist organization under the Terrorism Act 2000.
Being a member of or advocating support for Palestine Action is now considered a criminal offence and could result in a sentence of up to 14 years in prison. The Metropolitan Police addressed the situation by stating that expressing support for the proscribed group is illegal. Protesters gathered near the Mahatma Gandhi statue in Parliament Square with homemade cardboard placards expressing their solidarity with Palestine Action. Police were seen detaining individuals, with one woman being handcuffed and taken away by officers.
The decision to ban Palestine Action was made by the government after the group allegedly caused approximately £7m worth of damage to planes at RAF Brize Norton. Home Secretary Yvette Cooper announced the group’s proscription last month, condemning the damage done to military aircraft and labeling it as “disgraceful.” Since the conflict in Gaza began, Palestine Action has predominantly targeted arms companies with their activities.
