“We lost two great youngsters this morning,” said Oliver Connelly, 59, unable to hold back tears. “It’s bloody terrible. So young, both of them, and so much to look forward to in their careers.”
Local businesses around Anfield offered their support, with one barista at Proud Mary’s tearfully offering free coffee to the hundreds of supporters who assembled in their Liverpool jerseys to pay tribute to Jota. The club’s foundations, its community officers and staff were on hand to offer support and counselling. Anfield will remain open for fans to pay their respects in the days leading up to the funeral.
The player’s family asked for privacy in a statement released by Liverpool on behalf of the Silva family. Jean-Paul Silva, Jota and André’s cousin, spoke on behalf of the family, saying: “We are all in shock and completely devastated by the loss of our beloved Diogo and his brother André. The coming days will be extremely difficult for our family. We have lost two incredible human beings and will always carry their memory in our hearts. We are grateful for the outpouring of support and love from everyone.”
Jota’s former club Vitória de Guimarães will retire his number 20 shirt in his honour. The Portuguese club issued a statement saying: “We are devastated by the news of Diogo’s tragic passing. He will always be remembered as a talented player and a kind, generous person. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones at this time.”
