Swansea man jailed for entering bedrooms of sleeping women

Evan Powell, a 21-year-old former student, committed a disturbing series of break-ins at three homes in the Brynmill area of Swansea while the residents were asleep. The incidents occurred during the early hours of October 31, 2024. This led to Powell being sentenced to five years in prison and an additional four years on extended license by Judge Paul Thomas KC, who condemned his actions as “of an extremely sinister nature.”

In May, Powell was found guilty of three counts of trespassing with intent to commit a sexual offense and one count of attempting to do so, despite initially denying the charges. During the trial, one of the victims recounted waking up to find Powell standing in her bedroom at around 5:00 BST. The woman later realized that he had also entered her child’s room and rummaged through belongings. He made an unsuccessful attempt to access a fourth property before being stopped. The impact on the victims was severe, with one woman stating that her son, who has ADHD and autism, has struggled with sleeping since witnessing Powell’s intrusion.

During the sentencing, Judge Paul Thomas KC labeled Powell’s behavior as “opportunistic but nevertheless persistent,” noting that he prowled the streets in search of non-consensual sexual activity. Despite Powell’s defense claiming he was seeking unnamed individuals and a lost mobile phone, the judge dismissed these explanations as “ludicrous.” Powell, who had no previous convictions, had been given two community resolutions in October 2023 for attacking two young women in Swansea. The judge expressed regret that Powell had not been dealt with in court at that prior time
