Killer inmate jailed for gun revenge plot on Edinburgh prison guard

An inmate serving a life sentence at HMP Edinburgh, Robert Paterson, has been sentenced to 10 and a half years for orchestrating a revenge plot against a prison guard. Paterson, 45, claimed to be experiencing a heart attack after ingesting bags of cocaine, prompting suspicion from the guard who believed it was an escape attempt. The incident took place in November 2022, and Paterson felt that the guard’s actions put his life in danger.

During the trial at the High Court in Edinburgh, it was revealed that Paterson had instructed accomplices to acquire a handgun and ammunition as part of the planned attack on the guard. However, the police were able to thwart the plot before it could be carried out. In a turn of events, an ambulance arrived at HMP Edinburgh without being summoned by the prison staff, further escalating the suspicions surrounding Paterson’s actions.

Prosecutor Alan Cameron KC disclosed that Paterson expressed discontent over the perceived delay in receiving medical attention, citing concerns from medics about the risk of the cocaine bags rupturing in his stomach. Subsequently, he decided to seek retribution against the guard by arranging for him to be severely assaulted. Officials at the prison, alarmed by Paterson’s behavior, installed a concealed surveillance device in his cell in February 2023, capturing conversations where he discussed plans to harm the prison officer. Fortunately, law enforcement was able to intervene before any physical assault could take place, sparing the unaware guard from harm. Paterson was originally incarcerated at HMP Edinburgh after fatally shooting an individual in Cumbernauld in 2008
