Former head of Royal Navy sacked over behaviour

Following an investigation into his behavior, the Ministry of Defence has announced the termination of the former head of the Royal Navy, Admiral Sir Ben Key’s service. It was determined that Admiral Key’s conduct did not meet the expected values and standards of service personnel. In response to the findings, Admiral Key expressed deep regret for his actions, acknowledging that they had fallen below the standards he set for himself and the Royal Navy.

In a statement, Admiral Key accepted the decision to terminate his service, expressing remorse to those he had personally hurt. He also expressed gratitude for the support of his wife, family, and friends during what he described as a challenging period. Admiral Key, who had been set to retire from his position this summer after serving as head of the Royal Navy since 2021, was relieved of his duties in May due to allegations of misconduct.

Reports circulating at the time suggested that Admiral Key had engaged in an affair with a junior female colleague, a behavior viewed as a breach of military service code of conduct due to the power dynamics involved. Chief of Defence Staff, Admiral Sir Tony Radakin, emphasized the expectation of the highest standards of behavior from service personnel and civil servants, stating that appropriate action would be taken against anyone failing to meet these standards, regardless of their seniority. Admiral Key began his naval career as a university cadet in 1984, eventually qualifying as both helicopter aircrew and principal warfare officer. He has served globally in various frigates and destroyers, earning honors such as Commander of the British Empire (CBE) in 2016 and Knight Commander of the Order of the Bath (KCB) in the 2021 New Years Honours List. His successor as First Sea Lord is Gen Sir Gwyn Jenkins of the Royal Marines
