In Liverpool, three former senior staff members at the hospital where nurse Lucy Letby murdered seven babies and attempted to kill seven others have been arrested on charges of gross negligence manslaughter. These suspects, who were part of the senior leadership team at the Countess of Chester Hospital between 2015 and 2016, were questioned on Monday and subsequently released on bail. The arrests stem from an investigation into potential corporate manslaughter at the hospital that commenced in 2023 and expanded earlier this year to include gross negligence manslaughter. Letby, a 35-year-old from Hereford, is currently serving 15 whole life prison sentences after her heinous acts at the hospital’s neonatal unit from June 2015 to June 2016.
Detective Superintendent Paul Hughes emphasized that the corporate manslaughter aspect of the inquiry is focused on the hospital’s senior leadership and their decision-making processes to determine if any criminal activities were involved in response to the increased fatality rates. He further explained that gross negligence manslaughter is a separate offense that revolves around the grossly negligent actions or inactions of individuals. The CCRC is currently reviewing the application, but there is no fixed timeframe for a decision. Amidst these developments, McDonald noted that various concerns persist, prompting ongoing public discussions. He also called for a new public inquiry into the alleged “failings” in neonatal and paediatric care at the Countess of Chester Hospital. Former Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt has echoed similar sentiments, advocating for a re-evaluation of Letby’s case due to serious and credible doubts raised by an expert panel
