Ryland Headley: Cold case rapist and killer, 92, jailed for life

In the UK’s oldest cold case, a 92-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape and murder of a woman, a crime that took 58 years to solve. Ryland Headley was convicted of strangling 75-year-old widow Louisa Dunne in her home in Easton, Bristol on 28 June 1967. The victim was discovered on the floor of her living room by a neighbor, with a pathologist confirming that she died from asphyxia due to strangulation and pressure on her mouth. Mr. Justice Sweeting, the presiding judge, characterized the attack as “pitiless and cruel,” noting that Headley, a resident of Ipswich, Suffolk, displayed no remorse for his actions. At the time of her death, Mrs. Dunne was living alone.

According to the court, Headley had planned to rape Mrs. Dunne when he forcibly entered her residence and carried out a brutal assault. Judge Sweeting emphasized the gravity of the offenses, highlighting the complete disregard for human life and dignity demonstrated by the perpetrator. The victim’s vulnerability as a small, elderly woman living alone was underscored, with Headley’s actions described as pitiless and cruel by the judge. While Headley may not have intended to kill Mrs. Dunne, he was found guilty of raping her and perpetrating a vicious attack. This callous act was deemed a violation of her home, body, and life.

During the trial, Mary Dainton, Mrs. Dunne’s granddaughter, provided a victim impact statement in which she conveyed the far-reaching devastation caused by Headley’s actions. She spoke on behalf of those who were no longer alive, recalling the emotional challenges she faced as a result of the circumstances surrounding her grandmother’s death. Ms. Dainton highlighted the social stigma attached to rape and murder, expressing deep sadness over the absence of those who knew and loved Mrs. Dunne to witness the delivery of justice. Headley, who had denied the charges of rape and murder, received a minimum sentence of 20 years in prison, with Mr. Sweeting informing him that he would not be released and would spend the remainder of his life behind bars
