A defense company in north Bristol found its entrance blocked by activists from Palestine Action, a group that the government is seeking to classify as a terrorist organization. Two individuals were reported to be causing disruptions at Elbit Systems on Tuesday, using red paint to cover the entrance of the site. The group claims that Elbit Systems UK is involved in manufacturing and supplying weapons to the Israeli military, a claim that the company vehemently denies.
This is not the first time the facility has been targeted by protests. Previous incidents include paint being thrown over the building and a ram raid. Elbit Systems has been contacted by the BBC for comment on the recent events. Meanwhile, a draft order was presented to Parliament on Monday to amend the Terrorism Act 2000, adding Palestine Action to the list of proscribed organizations. If approved, being associated with the group could result in up to 14 years of imprisonment.
In a separate incident on Tuesday, protesters also occupied the rooftop of subcontractor Guardtech Group in Suffolk. Authorities were called to the Bristol site in the early morning hours to respond to the protest. Avon and Somerset Police are dedicated to allowing peaceful protests but will not tolerate any criminal activities. At the time of reporting, the protesters were still present at the site. Palestine Action is preparing a legal challenge against the government’s move to proscribe it, with a hearing scheduled for Friday to determine if the ban can be temporarily blocked.
