On the weekend of Scotland’s largest music festival, the Glasgow Subway workers are set to strike for three consecutive days. Last week, Unite organized three days of action, but this time it will align with the TRNSMT festival at Glasgow Green. The dispute arises from Unite and subway operator Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) over working conditions.
According to Unite, the underground system is suffering from severe understaffing, a claim that SPT has denied. Over 100 workers are expected to participate in the strike on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. This action coincides with TRNSMT, drawing around 50,000 music enthusiasts each day, with headliners like Snow Patrol, Biffy Clyro, and 50 Cent.
Sharon Graham, Unite’s general secretary, emphasized that the workers refuse to endure unacceptable working conditions any longer. She criticized SPT for failing to address the issue after years and pledged full support to the members in their pursuit of better employment circumstances. Despite SPT’s commitment to resolving the matter through negotiations, an interim offer was overwhelmingly rejected by Unite members.
Notably, last month’s strikes aligned with major concerts at Bellahouston Park, where attendees often commute via the subway station at Ibrox. Sting headlined the park on Wednesday, followed by rock bands Simple Minds and Stereophonics on Friday and Saturday. SPT is yet to provide a comment on the upcoming strikes
