Vandals have caused significant damage in a children’s playground in Cumbria, according to Wigton Town Council. The council reported that the vandals smeared mud over several pieces of playground equipment, dug multiple holes, and carved an offensive message into a grassy area nearby. Among the damage reported was a 6ft deep hole at Wigton Park’s BMX track, which council staff have since filled in.
The abusive message directed towards the local authority was discovered on Tuesday, along with the playground equipment covered in mud. Cumbria Police has received a report of criminal damage that occurred between June 21 and 24, including fences being knocked down and holes being dug in the park. Wigton Park, situated in the Greenacres housing estate, has been a public recreation space since 1923, with a BMX track on the premises since the 1980s.
Throughout the weekend of June 21 and 22, a series of holes appeared at the park, along with the deep hole that raised concerns for health and safety, prompting the council to act swiftly to fill it in on Monday. In addition to the damage in the playground, there were reports of trees being uprooted and knocked over in nearby Phoenix Park.
