Lucy Manning, a special correspondent, reported from the Old Bailey courthouse where a man was sentenced to life in prison for the murder of a 14-year-old schoolboy with a samurai sword in east London. Daniel Anjorin, the victim, was fatally wounded by Marcus Monzo while walking to school in Hainault on April 30 last year. During a 20-minute rampage, Monzo also injured five other individuals, including two police officers.
Judge Mr. Justice Bennathan, presiding over the case at the Old Bailey, described Monzo’s attack on Daniel as causing an “unsurvivable wound.” He sentenced Monzo to serve a minimum of 38 years in prison, citing Monzo’s consumption of cannabis as the primary factor leading to the violent outburst that day. Despite acknowledging Monzo’s previous good character, the judge highlighted the impact of his drug use on the tragic events that unfolded.
In addition to the murder of Daniel, Monzo was also found guilty of multiple other charges, including attempted murder, wounding with intent to cause Grievous Bodily Harm (GBH), aggravated burglary, and possessing a bladed article in a public place. Witnesses recounted Monzo’s chilling behavior following the attack, with some describing him as screaming in delight and smiling. Body-worn camera footage presented in court showed the officers’ heroic efforts to disarm Monzo despite sustaining serious injuries.
Despite Monzo’s claims of erratic behavior due to a personality switch and reference to an alter ego as a professional assassin akin to a Hollywood movie, the prosecution argued that self-induced psychosis from drug use did not absolve him of the responsibility for his crimes. The court also heard emotional victim impact statements from family members and witnesses impacted by the harrowing events. The Metropolitan Police Commissioner expressed hope that the verdict would bring a sense of justice and closure to Daniel’s loved ones while commending the officers’ remarkable bravery in responding to the incident
