Rogue bears' honey supply replenished by community in Devon

Charlotte Cox with BBC South West reported on a recent incident at the Wildwood Trust in Devon involving two European brown bears named Mish and Lucy. The bears managed to escape their enclosure and raided their keepers’ food store, consuming a week’s worth of honey, jam, and other supplies. This escapade led to a “sugar rush” for the bears and left their larder depleted.

Mark Habben, director of zoological operations at Wildwood Trust, expressed gratitude for the community’s generous support following the incident. Donations of honey and funds to purchase more were received, showcasing the local community’s solidarity. Visitors flocked to the trust to catch a glimpse of Mish and Lucy, who have become quite popular since the escapade.

The bears breached their enclosure at around 15:00 BST on Monday, prompting a park evacuation and lockdown. Staff members, trained in firearms, and the police were deployed to the site as the duo feasted on the supplies and played around. Lucy returned to the enclosure after about 55 minutes, while Mish was enticed back with a bell and food.

After indulging in the honey, Mish and Lucy experienced a sugar rush, leading to hours of energetic play, tree-climbing, and pond-jumping. The bears eventually crashed out in a deep sleep, resembling toddlers after a day of excitement. A safety review is underway at the Wildwood Trust to ensure that similar incidents, such as the unlocked gate that allowed the bears to escape, are prevented in the future
