A newly discovered dinosaur, the Enigmacursor, which was mistakenly classified as a Nanosaurus, has been identified as a unique species. This dog-sized dinosaur lived about 150 million years ago, scurrying around the feet of larger dinosaurs like the Stegosaurus. Researchers at the Natural History Museum in London have renamed it Enigmacursor, which means “puzzling runner.”
This exciting discovery sheds light on the evolutionary history of dinosaurs, particularly the transition from small dinosaurs to the large and eccentric creatures we are more familiar with. The Enigmacursor will be the first new dinosaur to be exhibited at the museum since 2014, offering visitors a glimpse into the ancient past.
Measuring at 64 cm tall and 180 cm long, the Enigmacursor is comparable in size to a labrador but with larger feet and a tail that likely exceeded the length of its body. Susanna Maidment, a professor at the museum, describes the dinosaur as having a relatively small head, indicating that it may not have been the most intelligent creature. Additionally, the presence of solid and dense hips suggests that the Enigmacursor was a fast runner.
The researchers emphasize the importance of correctly identifying and categorizing dinosaur species, as it forms the foundation of their work. By erasing the classification of Nanosaurus, they aim to better understand the diversity of dinosaurs from the Late Jurassic period. This rare and complete skeleton of a small dinosaur will play a crucial role in expanding our knowledge of early dinosaur evolution
