A recent event at Liverpool Town Hall highlighted the importance of environmental protection and community pride among young people. School children from various schools in North Liverpool gathered to showcase posters they had created, advocating for an end to littering and a commitment to caring for the local area. The students shared their ideas with notable figures such as the Lord Mayor, Councillor Barbara Murray, and Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities, Neighbourhoods, and Streetscene, Councillor Laura Robertson-Collins.
The posters were a part of a broader community initiative known as Keep North Docks Tidy, which involved students from seven schools engaging in community clean-up activities and learning about waste prevention. Following their experiences, the students used their knowledge to craft educational posters for a competition. Out of 150 participants, 14 winning posters were selected to be displayed in the community as large signs.
The Keep North Docks Tidy project was a collaborative effort involving Liverpool City Council, Liverpool Streetscene Services (LSSL), Onward Homes, Keep Britain Tidy, Veolia, and primary schools in the North Docks area. The project aimed to instill the message that “the environment belongs to everyone” and lasted for the remainder of the academic year. It coincided with the implementation of a new Recycling and Waste Strategy by the Council, focusing on enhancing recycling rates and addressing littering and fly-tipping.
In the wake of the successful completion of the Keep North Docks Tidy pilot, the Council intends to explore the possibility of extending the initiative to other neighborhoods in the city. Councillor Laura Robertson-Collins expressed pride in the students’ dedication to environmental preservation and community cleanliness, emphasizing the importance of listening to young voices. Joanne Danaher, Director of Housing and Home Ownership at Onward, commended the students for their positive impact and highlighted collaborative efforts to enhance local green spaces and make a difference in the community
