£20m bridge investment to secure Fishguard ferry port's future

Stena Line has unveiled plans for a major investment of up to £20m to revamp Fishguard port, signaling a commitment to the site for the next few decades. The highlight of this upgrade would be a new linkspan, a type of drawbridge essential for ferry operations. Construction is expected to kick off in 2026, with the new bridge set to be operational by 2027.

The decision to enhance Fishguard’s infrastructure comes after a previous attempt to build a new linkspan was scrapped in 2018, raising concerns about the future of the port. The existing single-lane linkspan, dating back to the early 1970s, is nearing its end of life and in dire need of an upgrade. Stena Line runs a roll-on roll-off ferry service between Fishguard and Rosslare, Ireland, twice a day.

Following the closure of berthing terminals in Holyhead due to Storm Darragh in December 2024, Fishguard port experienced a surge in sailings. The port was instrumental in providing relief freight services to Dublin and easing the backlog of traffic caused by the closure at Holyhead. Ian Davies from Stena Line noted that while the investment was long overdue, the new linkspan would offer enhanced flexibility for operations.

The revamped infrastructure at Fishguard port is expected to accommodate ferries of all sizes, providing increased resilience and operational capabilities. This forward-looking investment is viewed as a strategic move by Stena Line to ensure the port’s readiness for future challenges and opportunities. Hauliers, like Peter Harding, have lauded the investment, citing improved efficiency in loading and unloading processes and the potential for expanded docking capabilities for various vessels
