Bayesian: Sunken British superyacht raised from seabed

The luxury superyacht, known as the Bayesian, has been successfully lifted from the seabed off the coast of Sicily nearly a year after it tragically sank, claiming the lives of seven of the 22 people on board. The vessel, owned by British tech tycoon Mike Lynch, is undergoing a series of inspections following a request from the public prosecutor’s office. It will soon be fully removed from the water for further investigation.

A recent report revealed that Mr. Lynch and the crew were not aware of certain vulnerabilities of the yacht, such as its susceptibility to toppling in high winds exceeding 73mph. The salvage operation footage shows the damaged 56m (183ft) hull of the yacht being hoisted by cranes, showcasing the extensive mud covering its exterior. The ship’s name can be faintly seen on its stern as it emerges from beneath the water.

The vessel is set to be transported to the nearby port of Termini Imerese for further examination by Italian prosecutors probing the sinking incident. Last year in August, the Bayesian sank near the small fishing village of Porticello amidst erratic weather conditions, with witnesses recalling its rapid disappearance within minutes. The tragic event claimed the lives of prominent individuals, including British nationals Jonathan and Judy Bloomer, US lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife Neda Morvillo, as well as Canadian-Antiguan national Recaldo Thomas, among others.

Despite the devastating loss of seven lives, fifteen individuals, including Mr. Lynch’s wife Angela Bacares, were successfully rescued from the sinking vessel. The investigation into the incident continues as authorities work to determine the exact cause of the tragedy and prevent similar incidents in the future
