In a bid to combat pollution around schools, campaigners are calling on the Welsh government to establish more ambitious targets for improving air quality. Recent research conducted by Friends of the Earth Cymru indicates that over 200 schools in Wales could be located in areas where air pollution levels exceed World Health Organization guidelines. Although the majority of these schools are in Cardiff, the council has advised caution, highlighting that specific measurements at certain sites show lower pollutant levels than suggested.
Friend of the Earth Cymru analyzed data from the UK Department for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs, revealing high levels of nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter that could be harmful to approximately 65,000 Welsh students. Concerned about the impact of air pollution on young people, pupils like Ada, 11, worry about the effects on their health, especially those with conditions like asthma. The eco committee at Roath Park Primary School in Cardiff has been taking steps to encourage their peers and parents to reduce car usage to help the environment.
Director of Friends of the Earth Cymru, Haf Elgar, emphasized the need for collective action to reduce air pollution in Wales, urging the government, local authorities, and individuals to take responsibility. While recent legislation aims to address air quality in Wales, Elgar believes more stringent targets must be set to ensure progress and action across all government departments. It’s crucial to create a plan that fosters ambition and leads to meaningful change to combat the crisis of air pollution.
Healthy Air Cymru representative, Joseph Carter, noted the increasing cases of asthma in children due to air pollution and stressed the necessity for real changes, proposing measures to prevent idling cars as a step towards improved air quality. The Royal College of Physicians echoed the urgency for action, emphasizing that there is no safe level of air pollution. With growing concerns about the impacts on public health, there is an increasing call for the Welsh government to prioritize clean air as a fundamental public health issue that requires immediate attention and action
