Temperatures are expected to soar above 30C in England, triggering amber heat health alerts as a heatwave approaches the country. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has warned of significant impacts on health and social care services, with increased demand expected during this period. Parts of east Wales and regions in the Midlands, East, and South East England are likely to experience temperatures between 27C and 31C, with Greater London and the home counties reaching even higher temperatures.
In contrast, coastal areas will have cooler temperatures around 20C, while the rest of the UK will see temperatures ranging from 23C to 27C. This comes after a series of high temperatures nationwide, with previous yellow heat health alerts already in place. The alert system, which includes green, yellow, amber, and red levels, is designed to assess health risks. An amber warning signifies potential impacts on the health service, from managing medicines to workforce capabilities and care settings’ internal temperatures surpassing recommended thresholds.
The heatwave is attributed to a high-pressure system over the UK, drawing hot weather from Western Europe. While temperatures will remain in the mid to high twenties on Friday, some areas in South East England may reach or exceed 30C. An increase in temperature is expected in central and eastern England on Saturday, with peaks of 30 to 33C. Fire services have also issued warnings about water safety due to the high temperatures.
Organizations such as the British Heart Foundation and Age UK have provided advice to those at risk, emphasizing precautions for individuals with heart conditions and the importance of checking on older relatives. With a change in wind direction expected on Sunday, the heatwave is forecasted to subside, bringing cooler temperatures across all regions. Despite this, the long-term impact of climate change on global temperatures and extreme weather events remains a significant concern, as leading scientists have warned of the urgent need to limit global warming to avoid catastrophic impacts
