The Welsh government has taken a significant step in reducing environmental harm by voting to ban plastic wet wipes. The decision, made during a plenary session with all 60 members present, will make it illegal to supply wet wipes containing plastic to customers starting from December 2026. However, there are exemptions for medical-grade wipes and the ban does not apply to business-to-business transactions.
Deputy First Minister Huw Irranca-Davies highlighted the importance of this move in combating plastic and microplastic pollution. He emphasized that wet wipe pollution has a tangible and lasting impact on the environment. Irranca-Davies expressed hope that this ban will encourage the shift towards reusable and non-plastic products among manufacturers, retailers, and consumers. The regulations will align with a 2023 law that prohibits various single-use plastic items.
The ban specifically targets the supply of plastic wet wipes to consumers, excluding business-to-business transactions. Wet wipes designed for specific industrial use, where plastic-free alternatives are not viable, are also not included in the ban. However, efforts will be made to urge these sectors to innovate and find eco-friendly solutions. Medical-grade wet wipes containing plastic, intended for medical care or treatment, are exempt from the ban. A transition period of 18 months has been established to allow manufacturers to adjust their operations accordingly.
