Sisters drowned in Eryri national park Watkins Path mountain pools

An inquest revealed that two sisters met their tragic end at a picturesque beauty spot in a national park after drowning, according to a coroner’s report. Hajra Zahid, 29, and Haleema Zahid, 25, were recovered from the water at Watkin Pools in Eryri, situated in the Nant Gwynant area of Gwynedd, last week. The siblings had traveled to the north Wales national park, popularly known as Snowdonia, with friends from university. The hearing at Dafydd Orwig Chamber in Caernarfon indicated that investigations are ongoing, leading to the adjournment of the inquest.

Assistant coroner for north-west Wales, Sarah Riley, shared that the sisters had “entered the water and sadly both died as a result of drowning.” She extended her condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of the deceased. Hajra and Haleema Zahid, originally from Pakistan but residing in Maltby, Rotherham, South Yorkshire, were pursuing master’s degrees in international business at the University of Chester. Colleagues remembered Haleema as a compassionate, hardworking individual who left a positive impact on those around her.

Dr. Bilal Saeed, a former colleague of Haleema Zahid, praised her professionalism and kindness, noting her unwavering dedication. Sheharyar Shahnawaz, another ex-colleague, described her as lively, energic, and crucial support for her family after her father’s passing the previous year. He recalled her excitement about embarking on a new journey when she left for the UK. The Watkin Path, a key route to the summit of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), saw a tragic incident as North Wales Police received a distress call about the sisters.
