New Nissan Leaf electric car to be built in Sunderland

Nissan has introduced the details of its latest electric vehicle, the new Leaf, which will be manufactured at its UK factory. The third-generation model will be produced at the Sunderland plant by a team of 6,000 employees, according to the Japanese carmaker. Customers will be able to order the new Leaf later this year, which is capable of traveling up to 375 miles (604km) on a single charge and will be powered by batteries from AESC UK, Nissan’s battery partner located next to the Wearside factory.

In addition to the new Leaf, the Sunderland plant also manufactures Nissan’s Juke and Qashqai models. Alan Johnson, senior vice president of manufacturing and supply chain management at Nissan Motor Manufacturing, expressed pride in unveiling the third generation of the electric Leaf, which comes 12 years after the introduction of EV and battery manufacturing in the UK. Johnson commended the skill of the team in bringing a vehicle with advanced technology and aerodynamic design into mass production.

Managing director of Nissan GB, James Taylor, highlighted the impact of the Leaf as a pioneering electric vehicle that has inspired many to switch to electric motoring, emphasizing that it is built in Britain. The new Leaf is the first model launched under Nissan’s blueprint for electric vehicle production, known as Nissan’s EV36Zero project, which focuses on sustainability. Earlier this year, a second AESC UK electric car battery plant secured £1bn in investment, further advancing the company’s commitment to electric vehicle production
