Reporting from Bicester, thousands of people gathered on Saturday morning to pay tribute to a firefighter who tragically lost her life alongside a colleague and a member of the public during a major blaze. Jennie Logan, 30, died in the fire at the Bicester Motion site on 15th May, alongside her colleague Martyn Sadler, 38, and 57-year-old Dave Chester. The public procession commenced at 10:00 BST, with hundreds of firefighters and members of the emergency services lining up along Queen’s Avenue. A minute’s silence was held outside Bicester’s fire station before a private funeral.
Crowds of people stood in silence for approximately 20 minutes as they awaited the arrival of the cortege to honor the firefighter. Ms. Logan’s family, paying tribute to her bravery and fearlessness, said, “She will always be our hero and we are so immensely proud of her. Forever in our hearts.” The tragic incident also left two other firefighters seriously injured, with one remaining in a stable condition in the hospital and the other already discharged. Ms. Logan’s coffin, draped in the Union flag, was carried atop an aerial ladder platform fire engine, symbolizing her dedication and service.
Friend Stuart Smith, reflecting on Ms. Logan’s life, described her as strong, modest, and reliable, noting her determination to pursue her dreams. He recounted her achievements, saying, “She was like, ‘I’m going to join the fire service.’ She did it. ‘I’m going to play rugby.’ She did it. ‘I’m going to get a motorbike and learn how to ride it.’ She did it.” Similarly, Mr. Chester’s family remembered him as an amazing man and highlighted his selflessness and commitment to helping others. A well-known figure in Bicester, Mr. Chester ran his family company at Bicester Motion and was respected by many on-site.
The tragic incident unfolded at the Bicester Motion site, home to more than 50 specialist businesses focusing on classic car restoration and engineering. The fire, reported around 18:30 on 15th May, spread rapidly through a former aircraft hangar at the site on Buckingham Road, prompting a declaration of a major incident. Ten fire and rescue crews were dispatched to tackle the blaze as black smoke billowed into the sky, visible to residents of Bicester. Following the fire, Bicester Town Council opened books of condolence, and various church services and silences were held to honor the memories of those who lost their lives
