Angie Brown, a reporter for BBC Scotland based in Edinburgh and covering the East, recently highlighted an Edinburgh bakery’s creative solution to address safety concerns arising from its long queue. Lannan Bakery, located in Stockbridge, has gained popularity, resulting in a continuous line of customers outside its premises. However, the narrow pavement and the increasing number of customers waiting in line have posed challenges for pedestrians in the area.
In response to complaints from parents at Stockbridge Primary School about the queue endangering students by pushing them onto the road, Lannan Bakery owner Darcie Maher announced the appointment of a “queue warden.” This steward’s main responsibility is to ensure the safety of children from the nearby school while they pass by the bakery. To manage the crowd better, only eight customers are allowed inside the Hamilton Place bakery at any given time, while the rest wait outside on the street.
Tourist Jasmine Rehberger, who hails from Kentucky in the US, expressed surprise at encountering a queue steward but acknowledged the logic behind it. She appreciated how the presence of a queue warden organized the crowd and prevented overcrowding inside the bakery. Similarly, Wendy Fu, a student from Beijing in China, commended the bakery’s tactic to maintain order in the queue, preventing chaotic situations and road blockages.
Sophia Pearson, a local resident, shared her astonishment at the sight of a queue warden outside the bakery, noting how it seemed to be an effective measure to handle the significant number of customers. Edinburgh University student Yushan Han, originally from Hebei in China, highlighted the challenges posed by the narrow pavement, emphasizing the necessity of a queue management system. In response to these safety concerns, Councillor Stephen Jenkinson of the City of Edinburgh Council applauded Lannan Bakery’s initiative to address the issue and underscored the importance of ensuring a safe environment for all pedestrians
