The King has made a solemn request for the Royal Family members participating in the Trooping the Colour parade to wear black armbands in honor of the victims of the Air India plane crash, according to Buckingham Palace. As a mark of respect, King Charles has also called for a minute’s silence to be observed following his inspection of the parade on Saturday. A Palace spokesman stated that this gesture is to acknowledge “the lives lost, the families in mourning, and all the communities impacted by this tragic event.”
The Trooping the Colour ceremony in London, which commemorates the King’s birthday, will involve 1,350 troops in the annual parade. Despite undergoing cancer treatment, the King is anticipated to ride in a carriage this year, similar to his mode of transportation in the previous parade, rather than on horseback. Flags have been lowered to half-mast at royal residences, and the addition of black armbands serves as another display of respect by the Royal Family.
Following the devastating news of the air crash that claimed the lives of nearly all 242 passengers and crew, the King expressed his support and deep shock over the events in Ahmedabad. It is expected that coachmen and women on carriages in the parade, as well as senior royals in military uniform such as the King and the Prince of Wales, will also wear black armbands. However, those members of the royal family in attendance but not in uniform are unlikely to wear the armbands during the ceremony. The Trooping the Colour tradition includes an inspection of troops on Horse Guards, a parade along the Mall, and concludes with a Red Arrows flypast over Buckingham Palace, where the Royal Family typically watches from the balcony.
The King’s official birthday falls in November, but the event is held in the summer to take advantage of better weather conditions. Dating back to the 17th Century, the ceremony features regimental colors displayed in front of the monarch, with this year’s presentation highlighting the colors of the Coldstream Guards. Despite undergoing continued cancer treatment, King Charles has maintained an active schedule of engagements and recently returned from a well-received visit to Canada
