King and Queen cheered by thousands at Trooping the Colour

Sean Coughlan, a royal correspondent, reported from the Mall where crowds gathered to witness King Charles and Queen Camilla at the Trooping the Colour parade to celebrate the monarch’s official birthday. The royal couple rode in a carriage during the military procession along the Mall, culminating at Horse Guards Parade for the King to review guardsmen on parade. Members of the Royal Family, including the Prince and Princess of Wales and their children, joined them for the traditional pageantry, with a solemn tribute to the victims of the Air India crash reflected by the Royal Family wearing black armbands.

Tragically, the Air India crash resulted in the loss of 241 passengers and crew, including over 50 Britons, and at least eight individuals on the ground. The atmosphere of this year’s ceremony was notably more relaxed compared to the previous year, which was accompanied by rain. The public witnessed Catherine’s return alongside her children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and seven-year-old Prince Louis, who couldn’t contain his gap-toothed grin. The King, amidst his ongoing cancer treatment, opted to ride in the carriage for the second consecutive year instead of on horseback.

In addition to well-wishers and tourists, anti-monarchist protesters made their presence known during the event by chanting and waving Not My King flags. The birthday parade, boasting 1,350 troops, ended with the Royal Family at Buckingham Palace’s balcony for the customary flypast, led by the Red Arrows, who used a more environmentally friendly fuel blend in line with the King’s advocacy for sustainable aviation fuel usage
