A man from Pontyclun, Rhondda Cynon Taf, has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 22 years after attempting to murder a police officer while armed with Molotov cocktails. Alexander Dighton, 28, carried out the attack outside the Talbot Green police station in January while wearing body armor. Counter terrorism police revealed that Dighton had been interviewed a year before the assault but was not considered a threat at the time.
During the attack, Dighton injured several officers and admitted to trying to murder a police officer with a knife. As a result, he was sentenced at the Old Bailey in London. Despite the time spent on remand, Dighton will serve a minimum term of 21 years and 235 days before being eligible for parole. Judge Mark Lucraft KC stated that the crimes committed by Dighton indicate terrorist connections and emphasized his targeting of the police as a display of dissatisfaction with the government’s law enforcement efforts.
