NI disorder: numbers needing housing will increase, say NIHE

Since the start of the recent disorder in Northern Ireland, approximately 50 households have been provided with assistance. About 14 families have also been given emergency accommodation during this time. One incident involved a family with three young children who were relocated from a house in Coleraine following a racially-motivated arson attack at Mount Street.

Grainia Long, the chief executive of NIHE, mentioned that there is a growing demand for help, with more individuals seeking temporary housing. Ms. Long expressed her concern about the safety of families who feel it is unsafe to remain in their homes. She also stated that the organization is anticipating an increase in the number of households seeking assistance in the coming days.

Despite the rising demand for temporary accommodation, there is a shortage of suitable housing options, according to Ms. Long. She emphasized the importance of providing the right amount of temporary housing to meet the needs of those seeking help. NIHE staff have been actively supporting communities, especially older people who are anxious about their safety during this tumultuous period.

The recent disorder in Northern Ireland has resulted in a number of incidents, including attacks in various locations and clashes with law enforcement. PSNI Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson acknowledged the bravery of officers who worked to restore order and protect the community.
