Ian Shoesmith & Emma Stanley, reporting from Lancashire for BBC News, shared the distressing news about a man who has faced allegations of sexually assaulting and murdering a 13-month-old boy he was in the process of adopting. The accused, high school teacher Jamie Varley, faced charges of assault, cruelty, and possession of indecent images in relation to the young boy, Preston Davey, who tragically passed away shortly after being taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital in July 2023. Jamie Varley, 36, along with his co-accused John McGowan-Fazakerley, 31, were both remanded in custody following brief appearances at Lancaster Magistrates’ Court.
The horrific events unfolded on 27th July 2023 when Lancashire Police were alerted to an unresponsive baby boy brought to the hospital. John McGowan-Fazakerley faced charges of child cruelty, sexual assault, and child neglect during the period between March and July of the same year. In a five-minute hearing, Jamie Varley, sporting a beige polo shirt with dark hair streaked blonde, only confirmed his identity. He was accused of various offenses including manslaughter, child assault, child cruelty, and distributing indecent images.
Following his appearance, John McGowan-Fazakerley, dressed in jeans and a sweatshirt marked with images of owls and half-moons, also confirmed his identity and was remanded in custody. The defendants, originally from Blackpool, now reside in Grimsargh near Preston. The South Shore Academy in Blackpool suspended Jamie Varley as a teacher following his arrest in 2023. They are scheduled to appear at Preston Crown Court as the legal proceedings unfold
