Amber thunderstorm warning for east and south-east England

The UK experienced its warmest day of the year as amber thunderstorm warnings were issued over the weekend. Santon Downham in West Suffolk recorded the highest temperature of 29.4C, according to Met Office provisional figures. An amber weather warning is set to take effect in parts of eastern and south-eastern England from 20:00 BST on Friday night, with the possibility of flooding, power cuts, and disruptions to transportation services.

Prior to this, Kew, London had recorded 29.3C on May 1st, making Friday the new peak for the year thus far. Scotland also saw its warmest day with Lossiemouth in Moray hitting 25.7C. An amber warning for thunderstorms has been issued from Eastbourne, Sussex to Cromer in north Norfolk, with predictions of heavy rainfall and strong winds. The Met Office cautioned about potential flash flooding and urged people in affected areas to stay indoors and avoid floodwater if possible.

Additionally, yellow weather warnings are active in other parts of the UK where severe thunderstorms are expected. Showers and thunderstorms are forecasted for western England, Wales, and Scotland on Saturday. The high temperatures on Friday were significantly above average for this time of year, but a drop in temperature is expected for Saturday.
