Several US Jolly rancher sweets unsafe to eat, FSA says

A brand of American candies has come under scrutiny after the Food Standards Agency (FSA) issued a warning that certain products are deemed “unsafe to eat” due to ingredients that could potentially damage DNA and increase the risk of cancer. The FSA is advising businesses and consumers in the UK to refrain from purchasing or selling the products in question, which belong to the Jolly Ranchers line owned by the US company Hershey.

The FSA has highlighted the presence of chemical compounds known as mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons (MOAH) and mineral oil saturated hydrocarbons (MOSH) in the Jolly Ranchers products, emphasizing that these ingredients are not compliant with UK regulations. While the agency acknowledges that there is no immediate cause for concern and the food safety risk is considered low, it is warning against regular consumption of these items over an extended period of time due to the potential health risks associated with MOAH.

According to a recent food alert released by the FSA, MOAH has the capacity to cause DNA damage and escalate the likelihood of developing cancer, especially with prolonged and heightened exposure. These compounds are typically used in confectionery to prevent stickiness and enhance the appearance of the candies. Despite efforts by The Hershey Company to remove the affected Jolly Rancher products from the UK market since 2024, some British businesses have continued to import and distribute these items, prompting the FSA to issue a call to action.

Affected products within the Jolly Ranchers range include Jolly Rancher Hard Candy, Jolly Rancher ‘Misfits’ Gummies, Jolly Rancher Hard Candy Fruity 2 in 1, and Jolly Ranchers Berry Gummies. The FSA is recommending that individuals who possess any of these items refrain from consuming them and dispose of them at home. Consumers with concerns are encouraged to report them to the Trading Standards or environmental health department in their local jurisdiction. Additionally, the agency is urging enforcement authorities to promptly engage with businesses that have received or distributed these products to ensure their prompt removal from the market
