Lady Diana Brittan has expressed disappointment at the decision to drop an investigation into the officer who led an inquiry into false allegations against her late husband, Lord Leon Brittan. The allegations of Lord Brittan being involved in a Westminster paedophile ring were proven to be fabricated by a man named Carl Beech, who was later convicted of multiple crimes, including perverting the course of justice and fraud.
The Metropolitan Police’s investigation, named Operation Midland, cost the force £2.5m and was conducted from November 2014 to March 2016. Lord Brittan passed away in January 2015, unaware that there was no basis for the allegations made against him. Steve Rodhouse, the Met Police officer under investigation for gross misconduct in connection with the case, saw the proceedings dropped by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) due to recently disclosed material.
Lady Brittan revealed the harrowing experience she went through after the false allegations were made against her husband, including a police raid on her home while she was grieving alone. Despite Beech’s imprisonment and her husband’s name being cleared, Lady Brittan still believes that his reputation was irreparably damaged. She emphasized the need for accountability and prevention of similar incidents happening to others in the future.
Reflecting on the aftermath of the events, Lady Brittan expressed her desire for closure and justice. She highlighted the need for action to ensure that individuals falsely accused like her husband are not subjected to unwarranted scrutiny and anxiety.
