Urgent search in Highlands for teenager's missing support dog

BBC Scotland News correspondent Catherine Lyst reports on the urgent search for a missing teenager’s support dog in the Highlands. Two-year-old golden retriever, Louie, is trained to alert 17-year-old Ellie Lynn’s family when she is about to have an epileptic seizure. Unfortunately, Louie went missing on the path to Steall Falls in Glen Nevis after slipping his lead. Ellie’s mother, Louise Manson, 41, from Fort William, expressed their efforts in leaving out food and dirty clothes along the route in hopes of attracting Louie with his scent.

The family has been actively searching the area, camping, and hosting barbecues while reaching out to locals and visiting walkers to aid in the search. Wildlife cameras have been set up in hopes of spotting Louie. Over the weekend, there was a moment of hope when a tracker dog picked up Louie’s scent after smelling his blanket. Louise revealed, “The dog smelled some of Louie’s blanket and tracked him for a while – it must have been recent because the rain has been horrendous. It gives us a lot of hope that he’s still alive. People have also been hearing barking.”

Louise described the heart-wrenching moment when Louie disappeared in the rain on a narrow path while a family passed by, leaving the family devastated. Their efforts in searching the river and surrounding area yielded no signs of Louie. The community’s support and assistance have been tremendous, lifting the family’s spirits during this difficult time. Ellie emphasized Louie’s importance in managing her epilepsy, highlighting his friendly and cuddly nature that brings comfort. The family remains hopeful and determined to reunite with their beloved support dog.

Despite the challenges faced since Louie’s disappearance, Louise expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support received in the search efforts. The family’s emotional connection to Louie is evident, with Louise noting, “He’s got to be somewhere. I’ve heard of dogs appearing five years later, five months later. He’s a member of the family. He sits at the table with us when we have dinner. He’s definitely special.” Ellie also shared the impact of Louie’s absence, stating, “He’s very friendly, happy and cuddly. He sits on your knee and everything. He doesn’t really leave you alone. I miss him a lot. It’s weird without him around the house.” The search for Louie continues as the family remains optimistic about his safe return
