Dovecot dreams inspire psychedelic mural

A new, surreal mural has been unveiled at Dovecot Parade in Liverpool, created by renowned street artist John Culshaw. Taking inspiration from the whimsical world of dreams, this public artwork was a collaborative effort with the Dovecot and Knotty Ash community. The project was made possible through funding from Culture Liverpool, the UK’s Shared Prosperity Fund, and Councillor Harry Doyle’s Local Neighbourhood Fund, with workshops organized by the Dovecot Dreamkeeping Society.

Born and raised in the area, John Culshaw is responsible for several well-known public artworks in the city, such as the mural dedicated to Nelson Mandela in L8 and his interpretation of the Liver Bird on The Wedding House. Working alongside performance artist Izzie Major and theatre producer Sonia Chapman, John engaged with the community by conducting workshops at various local institutions, including schools, retirement homes, and community centers. These workshops allowed residents to contribute their design ideas directly to the mural.

Phase two of the project is set to include a jam butty mine as a homage to Knotty Ash’s beloved Ken Dodd, as well as a depiction of a train rushing towards a psychedelic vortex. The Dovecot Dreamkeeping Society initiative is part of Liverpool City Council’s Creative Neighborhoods program, focusing on collaborative art projects and creative interventions across the city. The project culminated in Dovecot Day of Dreams, a festive event featuring performances and interactive trails.

Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing, and Culture, Councillor Harry Doyle, commended John Culshaw’s ability to bring the community’s dreams to life through the mural. He highlighted the positive impact that public art has on local neighborhoods by uplifting residents’ spirits and enhancing the area. Local artist Fai McCabe, who participated in the mural workshop, expressed gratitude for the opportunity, noting that collaborating with John has elevated her work and brought life to the community outside the city center
