Two brothers experienced a harrowing ordeal on Saturday 17 May when they found themselves caught in a dangerous rip current while surfing at a popular beach in north-east England. Euan, aged 21, and Andrew, aged 19, had ventured out to Longsands beach in Tynemouth, where they were met with ideal surfing conditions with 5ft-high swells. Despite being advised by a hire centre on the safest spots to surf, the brothers were unknowingly swept towards a rip current by the northerly wind.
The situation quickly turned dire as Andrew was the first to be caught in the rip current while waiting for Euan who had gone ashore to switch surfboards. Euan rushed to his brother’s aid but soon found himself ensnared by the powerful current as well. Despite their efforts to swim against the current, they were gradually pulled further out to sea, and the brothers soon realized the gravity of their predicament. As they struggled to stay afloat, panic began to set in as they were separated from each other.
Both brothers credit their survival to staying calm and recalling the lessons their father had taught them about water safety. Remembering to remain composed and conserve energy, they managed to keep themselves afloat despite the treacherous circumstances. While Andrew was able to make it to safety by reaching the rocks, Euan found himself drifting farther away from the shore, feeling completely helpless in the face of the relentless current.
