A local shop has been directed to shut down its operations due to its involvement in the sale of illegal vapes, cigarettes, and tobacco to the general public. Located on Vauxhall Road, Carls Newsagent was also caught trying to sell a vape to an underage individual during a trading standards inspection. The Public Protection team of Liverpool City Council, in collaboration with Merseyside Police, initiated the investigation into the newsagent after suspecting illicit trading activities taking place on its premises.
Upon conducting two separate inspections, officials discovered unregulated vapes and cigarettes concealed under the floor and in the cash register. The seized products, with an estimated market value of £2,500, were found to be in violation of trading regulations. Consequently, Sefton Magistrates Court mandated a two-month closure for the shop for breaching the regulatory standards. Authorities emphasize that unregulated vapes and cigarettes may contain prohibited substances, posing serious health risks to users.
The Council’s Public Protection team reiterates the importance of adhering to the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations 2016, which outline specific restrictions and requirements for the sale of vapes. The recent closure order reflects the council’s ongoing efforts to combat the illicit trade of vapes and cigarettes, with nearly 150,000 illegal products seized from businesses in the previous financial year.
