Estyn inspectors highlighted a troubling decline in support and training for math teachers, coupled with a lack of comprehension regarding the new Curriculum for Wales. Recent Pisa international tests revealed a significant drop in Welsh teenagers’ math performance, furthering the gap compared to other regions in the UK.
Chief Inspector of Education Owen Evans emphasized the crucial role of robust mathematics education, not only for individual prospects but also for the economic future of Wales. While the report acknowledged pockets of effective teaching and leadership in mathematics, it raised concerns about the overall variability in teaching quality and subpar math standards among students. Issues cited included teachers focusing more on keeping students occupied rather than facilitating meaningful learning experiences, as well as a lack of adequate challenge for pupils.
Launching initiatives that instill positivity and enthusiasm towards mathematics, like the approach followed by Ysgol Uwchradd Aberteifi in Cardigan, was lauded by Estyn. However, broader challenges persist, such as a deficient understanding of Curriculum for Wales guidelines and a scarcity of specialized support for math teachers across Wales. The report also highlighted recruitment struggles for math specialists, leading to an upsurge in non-specialist teachers in the field. Additionally, disparities in math proficiency and performance, particularly concerning girls and pupils receiving free school meals, underscored the urgency for enhancing math education standards in the region.
Recognizing the implications of weak math skills on the economy, Chief Inspector Owen Evans stressed the need for elevating expectations for learners and providing comprehensive training and support for teachers.
