David Coleman sentenced over Ballymena knife and hatchet attack

In a disturbing case in County Antrim, a man has been sentenced to 11 years for a vicious attack that left the victim with permanent and life-altering injuries. The victim was found by bin men outside Broughshane in October 2021 after being stabbed in the chest, slashed on the face, and dumped in a field. David Coleman, 39, admitted to kidnapping and causing grievous bodily harm, leading to his sentencing at Belfast Crown Court. He will serve half of his 11-year term in prison and the other half on licence.

The court heard that during the “nightmarish attack,” the victim was subjected to a brutal assault, made to wipe up his own blood as he was kicked and punched by his attackers. The victim was initially asked to bag cocaine at Coleman’s flat before being accused of stealing from customers. Coleman proceeded to punch the victim in the face, stab him in the chest with a knife, and slash his face with the blade, all while laughing. At one point, Coleman called someone and asked, “Where do I get rid of somebody?”

Four other men involved in the attack were imprisoned last year after the victim was bundled into a car by other individuals and thrown into a field near Broughshane, where he was further assaulted with a hatchet. Judge Gordon Kerr KC, during sentencing, remarked that while Coleman did not cause the skull fracture with the hatchet, he utilized the knife in a cruel manner which contributed to the sustained and brutal nature of the attack. A Crown barrister revealed that Coleman had connections to paramilitaries and directed others involved in the kidnapping, leading to additional charges due to his risk factor and violent record.

Describing the incident as “barbaric and depraved,” the police condemned the shocking level of violence inflicted on the helpless victim. Detective Inspector McCoy expressed astonishment at the victim’s survival despite sustaining severe injuries that required intensive care and resulted in a permanent brain injury. The defenseless victim was viciously beaten, stabbed in the chest, and sliced on both sides of his face, all while the defendants callously laughed throughout the ordeal. With Coleman being held accountable for his actions, justice has been partially served in this horrifying case
