Bhim Kohli: Boy and girl sentenced for killing dog walker, 80

Reported by Matt Taylor and Laura Hammond for BBC News in Leicester and East Midlands, respectively, a tragic incident unfolded where 15-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl were convicted for their involvement in the death of an 80-year-old man named Bhim Kohli. Mr. Kohli was violently attacked at a park in Leicestershire, mere yards away from his home in Braunstone Town, and unfortunately succumbed to his injuries the following day. This heart-wrenching incident occurred on September 1st of the previous year.

During the trial at the Leicester Crown Court, it was revealed by prosecutor Harpreet Sandu KC that Mr. Kohli endured a prolonged “seven-and-a-half minute period of continuing aggression” while he was simply out walking his dog Rocky. The attack left Mr. Kohli with multiple fractures, including three broken ribs, but it was the spinal cord injury resulting from a spine fracture that proved to be fatal. In a gut-wrenching scene, Mr. Kohli’s own children discovered him at the park, writhing in pain after the vicious assault.

The court also heard heartbreaking testimonies from Mr. Kohli’s daughter, Susan Kohli, who mourned the loss of her father, describing him as a dedicated life partner to his wife for over five decades. Emotions ran high as she detailed the anguish and anger felt towards the young perpetrators who callously took her father’s life. Furthermore, Ms. Kohli expressed the ongoing fear and apprehension she and her mother now feel while walking their dog in the neighborhood, a stark reminder of the tragedy that befell their family.

As the proceedings unfolded in court, the presiding judge, Mr. Justice Turner, addressed both the boy and girl involved in the attack. While acknowledging that the racial aspect of the assault did not appear to be the primary motivation, Justice Turner admonished the attackers for their cowardly and senseless act of violence against an elderly man. The judge conveyed his conviction that the boy’s actions were driven by a misguided desire to impress the girl, who played a significant role in orchestrating the assault. Despite the sentencing handed down to the two teenagers, Mr. Kohli’s family expressed disappointment, believing the punishment did not align with the severity of their actions and the irreplaceable loss they caused
