Bhim Kohli, an elderly man who tragically lost his life in a racially motivated attack, had previously reported an incident where he witnessed two white boys racially abusing another man near his home, as revealed by the BBC. The attack on Mr. Kohli occurred in September while he was walking his dog in a park in Leicestershire, where he was physically assaulted by a 14-year-old boy while a 12-year-old girl filmed the horrific incident. Leicestershire Police acknowledged the need for improvement in logging anti-social behavior following this heartbreaking event.
The fatal attack on Mr. Kohli took place at Franklin Park, Braunstone Town, leading to his untimely death the following day. The perpetrators, a 15-year-old boy and a 13-year-old girl, were convicted of manslaughter and are awaiting sentencing. Another eyewitness, Linda Haigh, who had reported racially motivated incidents in the area to the police, expressed regret over their inaction and believes that Mr. Kohli might still be alive today if they had taken the matter more seriously.
In a separate incident in August, a man in his 40s was targeted by two boys using racially abusive language and physical violence before Mr. Kohli and others intervened to protect him. The victim expressed shock at the behavior displayed by such young individuals and believed that increased police presence in the area could have prevented the subsequent attack on Mr. Kohli. The court heard further disturbing details of racially motivated incidents involving children throwing objects at individuals of Asian descent prior to Mr. Kohli’s tragic demise.
The attacks have instilled fear in the victim of the August assault and his family, urging them to avoid certain areas due to concerns for their safety. While the perpetrators of the August assault received deferred youth caution for their crimes, the community continues to grapple with the aftermath of Mr. Kohli’s death and the need for greater vigilance and action to prevent similar tragedies from occurring
