Lucy Clarke-Billings reports for BBC News about a disturbing incident where arsonists were livestreamed as they set fire to a business supplying Starlink satellite equipment to Ukraine. This act was orchestrated by Dylan Earl, 20, and Jake Reeves, 23, who have admitted their involvement in the crime on behalf of the Russian mercenary group Wagner. The incident took place at a warehouse in Leyton, east London, on 20 March last year, causing approximately £1m in damages.
According to the prosecution at the Old Bailey, Jakeem Rose, 23, Ugnius Asmena, 20, Nii Mensah, 23, and Paul English, 61, were recruited to carry out the arson attack. Evidence against them includes CCTV footage, traffic cameras, and phone records tracking their journey in Mr. English’s vehicle to the scene of the fire. Prosecutors claim that Mr. Rose poured gasoline onto the warehouse doors and set them ablaze, while Mr. Mensah filmed the incident on his phone and livestreamed it on FaceTime.
The fire caused extensive damage to the property on the Cromwell Industrial Estate, risking the lives of those nearby. It was revealed that the lorry driver parked nearby attempted to put out the fire but was unsuccessful, putting himself in significant danger. The motive behind the attack was linked to the warehouse’s connection to Ukraine and its involvement in logistics, including delivering goods such as Starlink satellite equipment. The trial continues as the defendants face charges related to their involvement in the arson attack and their connections to the Wagner Group.
The prosecution highlighted that the actions of the defendants were allegedly motivated by financial greed, political influence, and ideology. The target of the attack was chosen due to its ties with Ukraine and its role in organizing humanitarian aid. Other planned attacks on businesses in London, orchestrated by Earl and Reeves, were intended to influence the government and intimidate the public. The court heard that two additional defendants are charged with failing to disclose information about terrorist acts
