The Catharine Street Active Travel Route and the Kiacrete demonstration on Upper Pitt Street showcase the team’s dedication to sustainability, community benefits, and forward-thinking solutions.
The Catharine Street Active Travel Route, completed in 2025 as part of a £2 million initiative, has transformed a significant city center corridor into a fully segregated cycling and walking network. Featuring new segregated cycle lanes, dropped kerbs, upgraded drainage systems, and enhanced road markings, the project aims to promote active travel and improve air quality in Liverpool.
On Upper Pitt Street, Liverpool City Council has collaborated with Imperial College London to introduce Kiacrete, a next-generation permeable concrete solution. Offering exceptional durability, 10 times the permeability of conventional alternatives, and a predicted 40% carbon saving over 40 years, Kiacrete represents a sustainable choice for urban streets, aligning with Liverpool’s climate resilience and net-zero goals
