A tragic incident in Kent has led to a father and son being charged with the murder of a four-year-old family member. Patrick Maughan, 53, and Owen Maughan, 27, both residents of Hill Rise, Darenth, appeared in court after the fatal crash that resulted in the death of young Peter Maughan. The pair also face charges for causing grievous bodily harm to Peter’s father, Lovell Mahon, who remains in critical condition in the hospital. Additionally, a one-year-old girl sustained minor injuries in the accident involving two grey Ford Ranger pickup trucks on New Barn Road in Southfleet over the weekend.
The two suspects are also accused of attempting to harm Peter’s one-year-old sister and their mother, Hayley Maughan. Mr. Mahon, along with his children, was traveling in the same vehicle during the tragic incident. The court proceedings saw the two men, Patrick and Owen Maughan, appearing in brief, separate hearings where they only confirmed their identities. Following their appearances, both were remanded in custody, with their next court appearance scheduled for Maidstone Crown Court on Friday. A date for a provisional plea and trial preparation hearing has been set for July 2nd.
