A man from Britain was apprehended in Chile after authorities alleged to have uncovered £200,000 worth of crystal meth hidden inside his suitcase. Identified as William Eastment from Milbourne Port in Somerset, the individual was on a journey from Mexico to Chile when Chilean officials purportedly discovered over 5kg (11lbs) of methamphetamine in his luggage. Customs officers in Chile divulged that they noticed anomalies in one particular piece of luggage, leading them to trace back to the owner.
The Metropolitan Customs Regional Director, Rodrigo Díaz, remarked, “Once the traveler collected the suspicious luggage from the airport baggage carousel, it was promptly singled out by our officers and moved to the secondary screening zone, where the narcotics team confirmed the presence of a concealed object.” Subsequent examinations disclosed that the white substance within six plastic bags inside the suitcase amounted to 5,100 grams (179 oz) of methamphetamine hydrochloride following testing. Mr. Eastment was then transferred to anti-narcotics authorities at the airport and subsequently detained after an initial court appearance.
In response to the situation, a spokesperson from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) mentioned, “We are aware of a British man detained in Chile and are in contact with his family and the local authorities.” The nature of the case has raised concerns about drug trafficking and smuggling activities in the region, as authorities strive to combat illicit substances entering their borders.
