Walton’s strength and unity celebrated in new anthology

The Walton community in Liverpool recently celebrated their identity and strength with the unveiling of an anthology called Walton Rising: Tales from Spellow. This anthology was commissioned by Culture Liverpool in response to the torching of Spellow Community Hub and Library during civil disorder last summer. The project was a result of a 12-week creative writing course called Walton, What’s Your Story? which was organized by Writing on the Wall.

Led by professional writers and creatives, including Helen Jeffery, Joseph Roberts, Claire Beerjeraz, PJ Smith, Amina Atiq, and Blue Saint, the workshops helped members of the community unlock their stories and memories dating back to 1939. A culmination of poetry, fiction, fact, and flash fiction were collected in the anthology. The launch event took place at Isla Gladstone with a free family event titled ‘From Spellow to Southport… with Love’.

Liverpool City Council’s Cabinet Member for Culture, Health, and Wellbeing, Councillor Harry Doyle, emphasized the importance of a cultural response to amplify local voices of reason and foster community cohesion. Madeline Heneghan, Co-Director of Writing on the Wall, highlighted the organization’s commitment to being a voice for change and a platform for truth. The project coordinator, Lyn Papadopoulos, expressed gratitude for the group’s willingness to share personal stories, noting the power of community support throughout the process. Local participant Angela Cheveau expressed her pride in being part of a project that celebrates the strength and resilience of the Walton community
