A young driver who caused a pile-up of police cars while fleeing from them after a first date has been sentenced to 14 months in a young offender institution. Mazyar Azarbonyad, 20, admitted to dangerous driving which resulted in seven officers injured and five police cars damaged in the crash. The incident took place on the A1 near Denton Burn, Newcastle, around 02:30 BST on 9 April.
Accompanied by a woman in the passenger seat, Azarbonyad accelerated up to speeds of 120 mph as he turned onto the A1 before the significant crash near the Denton roundabout. The court heard that the woman, in her 20s, pleaded with him to stop, expressing her fears that someone could get killed. She is currently on bail as further investigations are being conducted into her suspected possession of Class A and B drugs.
According to the prosecution, Azarbonyad sped away from officers who attempted to stop him in Swalwell, Gateshead, due to a defective rear light on his BMW. Despite being given an interim ban, he drove again in the days following the crash, leading to his subsequent detainment. The judge highlighted the “hair-raising” speed at which Azarbonyad was driving, emphasizing the severity of the incident and its potential consequences
