In an effort to promote a healthier environment for children and young people, Liverpool is implementing a Smokefree Play Areas initiative. This initiative involves installing new smoke and vape-free signs in 60 parks throughout the city to deter smoking and vaping in spaces where children play. The design for these signs was created by Abbie-Grace Breen, a year 5 pupil at Emmaus Primary School in Croxteth, chosen from over 240 entries. The signs boldly state, “Don’t smoke or vape in our park, we like to play in clear air!”
Originally launched in 2013, the Smokefree Play Areas initiative aims to support the wellbeing of children and encourage healthier lifestyles from a young age by preventing smoking in areas where children frequent. With increasing concerns about the impact of vaping on young people, the initiative is now expanding to include e-cigarettes. This expansion ensures that playgrounds remain free from both smoke and vape exposure, contributing to a safer environment for children.
Research indicates that children who are exposed to smoking in their everyday environment are three times more likely to take up the habit themselves. By incorporating vapes into the Smokefree Play Areas initiative, Liverpool is taking a proactive step to address the normalization of smoking and vaping in front of young people. This approach can help reduce the likelihood of children picking up these harmful habits as they grow older. Additionally, the ban on disposable vapes, introduced recently, aims to decrease waste and combat the rising trend of vaping among young people.
For those looking for support to quit smoking, Smokefree Liverpool offers resources such as contacting them via phone at 0151 374 2535, texting QUIT1 to 61825, or visiting their website at www.smokefreeliverpool.co.uk. Through these efforts, Liverpool is working towards creating a cleaner and healthier environment for children and young people to enjoy their play areas free from the harms of smoking and vaping
